Data Security Workshop Series 1.0

December 11th, 2014  1:00 – 4:00 MST

We subscribe to the philosophy that your protected health information (PHI) and your confidential business information should drive your data protection program. The data is at the center because of its intrinsic value to patient care, healthcare operations and, unfortunately, the criminal element. After all, when we strip down the HIPAA Rules to their very essence, the basis for the Rules themselves, is PHI.

This Immersive Academy Workshop is intended to educate and inform so that you cannot only reframe the discussions in your organizations around data protection, but chart a new course that truly aligns your data protection program with the way that data is being created, received, maintained, transmitted and share.

Program Details

01 – Compliance and Enforcement Update

Phase 2 of the OCR’s HIPAA Audit Program provides another opportunity for the OCR to examine different mechanisms for compliance with HIPAA/HITECH, identify best practices, and discover new risks and vulnerabilities.  The OCR has communicated “what” will be audited in Phase 2 in the areas of privacy, security and breach notification. The OCR has also communicated how organizations will be “selected” for audit. Finally, the OCR has also provided some insight into the “approach” that will be taken, short of publishing the protocol itself, as of yet. This module will offer participants the absolute “latest and greatest” on the OCR HIPAA Audit Program and how an organization can prepare and maintain a posture of audit readiness.

02 – Security Risk Analysis Redefined

Risk analysis is the tip of the spear of data protection; it is foundational. Conducting a risk analysis is the first step in identifying and implementing safeguards that comply with and carry out the standards and implementation specifications in the HIPAA Security Rule. According to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), however, we are not performing risk analysis very well. This module will break down the elements of the risk analysis process vis-à-vis the HIPAA Security Rule and its authoritative source, NIST 800-30. Participants will be encouraged to bring copies of their organization’s most recently completed risk analysis documentation as this module will be a true learning laboratory.

03 – Privacy/Security Awareness Training for the Decade of Data

Moving beyond the HIPAA Privacy, Security, Breach Notification and Omnibus Rules, today’s healthcare personnel need to think of themselves as not just “data stewards” but “data ambassadors.” This module will start with an introduction to the “current state” of healthcare data value and introduce the concepts of data governance and data management from both an operational and compliance perspective. This module is constructed as a deliverable unto itself that you can present or utilize upon your return to your organization.
